The budABC operon encodes the enzymes of the 2,3-butanediol biosynthetic pathway from Enterobacter aerogenes, including acetolactate synthase (BudB), acetolactate decarboxylase (BudA), and acetoin reductase (BudC). Heterologous expression of this pathway in electron transport chain–deficient Escherichia coli enables the conversion of pyruvate to 2,3-butanediol, with BudC catalyzing the NADH-dependent reduction of acetoin to 2,3-butanediol [356].
