Enterobacter aerogenes

Description

Enterobacter aerogenes (currently reclassified as Klebsiella aerogenes) is a facultative anaerobic bacterium capable of producing 2,3-butanediol from pyruvate via the BudABC pathway. While 2,3-butanediol formation occurs predominantly under aerobic or microaerobic conditions, its primary physiological role is redox balancing and prevention of medium acidification rather than strict aerobic metabolism [356].
