The cyoABCD genes encode the Cyo terminal oxidase complex in Escherichia coli, which transfers electrons from quinols to molecular oxygen while generating a proton motive force, with a stoichiometry of two protons translocated per electron transferred (H⁺/e⁻ = 2). Deletion of cyoABCD significantly improves the aerobic production of 2,3-butanediol and isobutanol by attenuating electron transport chain activity and increasing the intracellular NADH/NAD⁺ ratio [356].
