The thiM gene encodes hydroxyethylthiazole kinase from Escherichia coli, which, together with isopentenyl phosphate kinase from Methanococcus vannielii (MvIPK), has been employed in the isopentenol utilization pathway (IUP) to phosphorylate isopentenols to isopentenyl monophosphate. This kinase combination outperformed alternative pairings in terms of lycopene production and was therefore selected for the biosynthesis of IPP and DMAPP, the direct precursors of geraniol [354].
