The ubiE gene encodes demethylmenaquinone methyltransferase (also known as 2-methoxy-6-polyprenyl-1,4-benzoquinol methyltransferase), an enzyme involved in both ubiquinone and menaquinone biosynthesis in Escherichia coli. Its expression was downregulated via CRISPR/Cas9-mediated engineering of the 5′ untranslated region, generating knockdown mutants (UbiE117, UbiE86, and UbiE26) with reduced electron transport chain activity. This modification improved isobutanol production but did not enhance 2,3-butanediol production [356].
