The adhE gene encodes a bifunctional alcohol/aldehyde dehydrogenase involved in ethanol production and native oxidation of NADH to NAD+ in Escherichia coli; its deletion increases the availability of NADH, thereby enhancing the production of alternative reduced metabolites that serve as final electron acceptors [353]. Inactivation of adhE in Escherichia coli prevents carbon loss to ethanol, thereby redirecting carbon flux toward acetyl-CoA and enhancing the biosynthesis of other metabolites [349].
