The ackA gene encodes acetate kinase in Escherichia coli and participates in acetate formation. Deletion of ackA increased intracellular malonyl CoA levels by eliminating a competing acetate producing pathway. This modification has been combined with overexpression of acs and acetyl CoA carboxylase to further enhance malonyl CoA availability [359].
