The budABC operon encodes the enzymes of the 2,3-butanediol biosynthetic pathway from Enterobacter aerogenes, with BudB (acetolactate synthase) catalyzing the first and committed step, the condensation of pyruvate to acetolactate. BudA (acetolactate decarboxylase) and BudC (acetoin reductase) subsequently convert acetolactate to 2,3-butanediol, with BudC consuming NADH. Heterologous expression of this pathway in Escherichia coli electron transport chain mutants enables efficient conversion of pyruvate to 2,3-butanediol coupled to NADH oxidation [356].
