The noxE gene from Lactococcus cremoris MG1363 encodes a water-forming NADH oxidase that specifically uses NADH to reduce O2 to H2O, thereby regenerating NAD⁺. Overexpression of noxE in Escherichia coli decreases the intracellular NADH/NAD⁺ ratio, alleviates redox-mediated inhibition of glycolysis, enhances cell growth and glucose consumption, and ultimately increases 2,5-dimethylpyrazine production [358].
