MvIPK encodes isopentenyl phosphate kinase from Methanococcus vannielii, which, in combination with Escherichia coli hydroxyethylthiazole kinase (ThiM), has been used in the isopentenol utilization pathway (IUP) to phosphorylate isopentenyl monophosphate to isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP). This enzyme configuration resulted in higher lycopene titers than alternative combinations and was therefore employed for the biosynthesis of IPP and DMAPP, the direct precursors of geraniol [354].
