menaquinone-8
Description
Menaquinone (MK) is a membrane-bound quinone predominantly synthesized under anaerobic or microaerobic conditions in Escherichia coli, where it functions as an electron carrier in the anaerobic respiratory chain. Its biosynthetic pathway partially overlaps with that of ubiquinone, with UbiE acting as a shared C-methyltransferase that catalyzes a common methylation step in both quinone biosynthetic routes [356].
